  Recently, Lloyd's List (Lloyd's List) announced the ranking of the world's top 100 container ports in 2022, in which 27 Chinese ports are on the list, and their rankings are:


  Shanghai Port (1st), Ningbo Zhoushan Port (3rd), Shenzhen Port (4th), Qingdao Port (5th), Guangzhou Port (6th), Tianjin Port (8th), Hong Kong Port (9th), Xiamen Port (14th), Kaohsiung Port (18th), Taicang Port (22nd), Rizhao Port (30th), Lianyungang Port (33rd), Qinzhou Port (35th), Yingkou Port (39th), Dalian Port (45th) Yantai Port (49th), Fuzhou Port (56th), Dongguan Port (57th), Tangshan Port (61st), Nanjing Port (65th), Jiaxing Port (75th), Nantong Port (84th), Haikou Port (86th), Quanzhou Port (87th), Jinzhou Port (95th), Taipei Port (98th), Taichung Port (99th).


  Compared with last year, Qingdao Port ranked 1 place higher, Guangzhou Port ranked 1 place lower, Xiamen Port ranked 1 place lower, Kaohsiung Port ranked 1 place lower, Taicang Port ranked 3 places higher, Rizhao Port ranked 5 places higher, Lianyungang Port ranked 3 places higher, Qinzhou Port ranked 9 places higher, Yingkou Port ranked 5 places lower, Dalian Port ranked 6 places higher, Yantai Port ranked 3 places higher, Fuzhou Port ranked 6 places higher, Dongguan Port Ranking rose 1 place, Tangshan Port ranked 2 places, Nanjing Port ranked 2 places, Jiaxing Port ranked 8 places, Nantong Port ranked 7 places, Haikou Port ranked 6 places, Quanzhou Port ranked 10 places, Jinzhou Port ranked 5 places, Taipei Port ranked 10 places and Taichung Port ranked 5 places.


  In 2022, the Port of Shanghai completed a container throughput of 47.3 million TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 0.6%, and ranked first for the 13th consecutive year. in the first half of 2022, the Port of Shanghai saw a decline in throughput due to the epidemic closure, and in order to reach the goal of positive growth for the whole year, the Port of Shanghai opened the Northeast Asia Empty Container Transshipment Center in the second half of the year and set up the operation of SGX (Huai'an) International Container Terminal Company Limited, Lianyungang Interconnection Container Company Limited, and Jiangxi Container Terminal Operation Management Company Limited.   Ranked second in the port of Singapore in 2022 to complete the container throughput of 37.28 million TEUs, and the difference between the Shanghai port of more than 10 million TEUs, the gap further widened.   Among the ports in South China, Shenzhen Port and Guangzhou Port ranked fourth and sixth.2022 In the first half of the year, these two ports were hit hard by the epidemic, and the container throughput of Shenzhen Port once fell by more than 10% year-on-year, but with the liberalization of the second half of the year, the economy rebounded, and the demand for foreign exports rose, and the container throughput also turned from negative to positive. Among them, Shenzhen port as China's main manufacturing, science and technology and export center in the southeast, throughput growth rate of 4.4%. Guangzhou Port was affected by the strong demand for automobile exports, the automobile ro-ro business continued to grow, and with the opening of the Nansha International Cold Chain Project, it became an important engine for the growth of Guangzhou Port's cold chain business.


  Among the top 10 ports, Qingdao Port is growing rapidly, adding no less than 28 new routes in 2022, completing a container throughput of 2.57 million TEUs, an increase of 8.3% year-on-year, and replacing Guangzhou Port among the top five ports in the world.


  Among the 5-10, only Tianjin Port exceeded its total container throughput in 2021, narrowing the gap with the Port of Busan. And under the impact of the epidemic, the throughput of Hong Kong port dropped by more than 1 million TEUs, totaling 16.69 million TEUs of container throughput, down 6.3% year-on-year, and is facing the risk of falling out of the global top 10.


  In 2022, a total of 7 ports in China will have a growth rate of more than 10% in throughput, they are: Taicang Port (14.0%), Rizhao Port (12.2%), Qinzhou Port (16.8%), Dalian Port (21.4%), Yantai Port (12.8%), Jiaxing Port (28.4%), Nantong Port (10.5%).

  Lloyd's List pointed out that the world's top 100 ports realized a 1.5% growth in total throughput in 2022, amounting to about 685.8 million TEUs, which is the lowest growth rate of the world's top 100 container ports since the 2009 global financial crisis. However, Chinese ports added 11.4 million TEUs of throughput compared to 2021 throughput, totaling 4.4% growth, and were the main reason why the top 100 ports achieved a small increase in container throughput.


  Notably, Lloyd's List mentions that cargo volumes at some Chinese ports may be overstated.2023 In early 2012, Linerlytica released a report highlighting that throughput at some Chinese ports contained 'throughput inflation' due to a mismatch between domestic growth and throughput figures reported by the rest of the world.2024 Linerlytica said that the throughput at some Chinese ports contained 'throughput inflation'.   The container industry doesn't look promising for quite some time to come, with the latest forecasts from Drewry suggesting that the global container port industry will only accomplish a tiny growth of around 1% in 2023.
