Unmanned + wind assisted, new concept container ship launched!
Belgian maritime innovation company Zulu Associates has unveiled a new concept design for its wind-assist-equipped 200 TEU self-propelled short-haul container ship, the Zulu MASS, which is scheduled for commissioning in 2025.
The Zulu MASS type design was developed by Dutch naval architects Conoship International in conjunction with Anglo Belgian Shipping Company, a subsidiary of Zulu Associates, and will operate in the English Channel.
The design is a larger marine version of the inland 90 TEU X-Barge, with an overall length of 100 meters and a 650kW electric propulsion generator, which can be powered by hydrogen, ammonia or methanol fueled engines, as well as by hydrogen, ammonia or methanol fuel cells. Currently in the final build design stage at Zulu Associates, it will feature a wind-assisted system in addition to all-electric and autopilot features, as well as the ability to employ wave wing propulsion.
The Zulu MASS-type design has received Approval-in-Principle (AiP) from Lloyd's Register in 2022, marking a major milestone in the energy transition and maritime digitalization.
Antoon Van Coillie, CEO of Zulu Associates, confirmed that the designers are developing a modular energy vessel for the Zulu MASS, which will use batteries and/or a hydrogen power system to provide the main source of energy, and that discussions are underway with energy suppliers. And explains, 'Autonomy is still in its infancy, but we want to demonstrate the possibilities and support a regulatory process that keeps pace with innovation. Zulu MASS is therefore designed to be part of an unmanned maritime autonomy system, which will allow it to compete with fossil fuel or hybrid vessels.'
