The first global capacity ranking for 2024 is out!
Data released by Alphaliner shows that as of today (January 2, 2024), the total number of container ships operating globally reached 6,781, an increase of 265 ships compared to the same period of the previous year (January 6, 2023, the same hereinafter), and the global capacity totaled 28,518,895 TEUs, an increase of 2,117,946 TEUs, or a year-on-year increase of 8.04%.
Compared with a year ago, among the top 20 liner shipping companies in terms of capacity, Ocean Net Link Shipping (ONE) and Evergreen Marine Corp. swapped their rankings, taking the sixth and seventh places, X-Press Feeders rose four places to 14th, Koryo Shipping and Air Iran Airways dropped one place in the rankings, taking the 15th and 16th places, and CGC Logistics dropped to 19th.
Singapore's Sea Leader Shipping and Changjin Merchant Marine entered the top 20 list at 18th and 20th places, while Dexiang Marine and Antong Holdings dropped out of the list.
In terms of specific capacity, compared to the same period in 2023, MSC's total operating capacity increased by 1,032,767 TEUs and 88 vessels in operation, which is the largest capacity addition among the top 20 liner companies.
ONE's total operating capacity increased by 274,313 TEU and 29 vessels; Duffy Group's total operating capacity increased by 193,627 TEU and 28 vessels; COSCO Shipping's total operating capacity increased by 186,228 TEU and 24 vessels; and Hapag-Lloyd's total operating capacity increased by 180,424 TEU and 17 vessels.
In addition, Star Shipping, Wanhai Shipping, X-Press Feeders and other companies, the total capacity has also increased to varying degrees.
Among the companies whose capacity decreased, Maersk's total operating capacity decreased the most, by 141,737 TEU, with 37 fewer vessels in operation, while HMM's total operating capacity decreased by 34,335 TEU, with 6 fewer vessels in operation. Koryo Shipping's total operating capacity decreased by 354 TEU and the number of vessels in operation decreased by two.
In terms of newbuildings, Duffy Group had the largest increase in newbuilding capacity over the past year, with an increase of 511,157 TEU and 30 newbuildings. Evergreen Marine's newbuilding capacity increased by 333,600 TEU and newbuildings increased by 19 ships. Maersk's newbuilding capacity increased by 84,184 TEU and 6 newbuildings, while HMM's newbuilding capacity increased by 81,000 TEU and 9 newbuildings. PIL's newbuilding capacity increased by 30,900 TEU and newbuildings increased by 4 vessels.
