U.S. harbours: very comfortable with Chinese-made cranes

For a long time, the United States has been attacking and discrediting China, and recently targeted at Chinese-made cranes. However, a number of U.S. ports are still using these cranes and have confidence in their safety.

U.S. ports are very comfortable with Chinese-made cranes

U.S. President Joe Biden recently signed an executive order proposing an investment of more than $20 billion over the next five years for the construction of port security, including the production of new harbour cranes in the local area to replace Chinese-made cranes in ports across the United States.

U.S. officials claim that these cranes can be remotely controlled, repaired, and programmed, making them susceptible to data breaches. However, these officials have failed to provide any evidence of related security concerns. In fact, U.S. ports are confident in the safety of these devices.

The Virginia Port Authority has said it has no intention of replacing the Chinese-made cranes and has not had any discussions with the federal government on the matter. Port of Virginia spokeswoman Cathy Wick revealed that all 27 of the port's cranes are made in China. Not only that, but the port ordered eight more cranes from China not long ago, four of which will be delivered later this year and the other four will be delivered next August.

Vick told Virginia Business Magazine that there have been no reports of cybersecurity breaches in the cranes and no tips from the federal government that the cranes are being used for espionage.

The North Carolina Ports Authority said the cranes at the state's Wilmington port are made in China, and they recently conducted a security assessment of the port and did not find any security issues.

Netherlands-based Maersk Container Terminals (APM Terminals) recently commissioned two state-of-the-art Chinese-built cranes at the Port of New York-New Jersey to improve efficiency and promote sustainability.

Chinese-built cranes are hard to replace

The ports' decision is consistent with the position of the American Association of Port Authorities. The association recently said that the so-called security concerns are nothing more than sensationalism, and that there is no evidence that the cranes are being used to disrupt or track port operations.

The U.S. government has no relevant evidence, making it difficult to justify its concerns. At the same time, the United States also lacks a viable alternative, the ports can not give up the use of Chinese-made cranes in the short term.

In short, despite the determination of the United States to cultivate the local manufacturing industry, American-made cranes want to compete with similar products in China is still a matter of time.
