Emergency warning! The port is closed for a fortnight!
Maersk has issued an urgent notice that the Finnish Transport Workers' Union (AKT) has announced a political strike that will result in the forced closure of the country's ports for a fortnight (11 March - 25 March).
Maersk said in its announcement that the AKT's strike is in opposition to amendments to labour legislation proposed by the government.
The two-week political strike will affect operations at all Finnish ports.
Maersk added in the announcement that it will inform its customers as soon as possible about the impact of the strike on Maersk's feeder operations.
On 7 March, DXN also issued an alert on the matter on its website.
It said that there would be operational delays in sea, air and road logistics.
The closure of Finnish ports will have a knock-on effect:
Firstly, goods that rely on Finnish ports for transhipment or loading and unloading will be affected.
As a result of the port closures, these goods will not be able to be transported as planned, which may lead to delivery delays or cancellations.
Secondly, shipping lines may need to re-route to avoid the affected areas, which will increase operating and time costs.
In addition, the strike may trigger workers in other countries and regions to follow suit, further aggravating tensions in the global shipping industry.
