The world's first fifth-generation large-scale LNG carrier delivered in Shanghai

  On the morning of May 15, the world's first fifth-generation 'Changheng Series' 174,000 cubic meters large transport vessel 'Green Energy Ying', independently developed, designed and built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co. The ship was named and delivered in Hudong-Zhonghua Changxing Island plant five months earlier than the contract date. This 'super refrigerated truck at sea', which is innovatively developed by China and represents the highest technological level in the field of large LNG carriers in the world today, has changed from a construction plan to a real-life picture.


  With an overall length of 299 meters, a beam of 46.4 meters and a depth of 26.25 meters, classed by American Bureau of Shipping and China Classification Society, the 'Green Energy Ying' adopts a dual-fuel main engine of China Ship WinGD 5X72DF2.1 installed with the latest technology of intelligently controlling the exhaust gas recirculation system, and it is the largest LNG carrier in China so far. It is the first ship of China's largest LNG carrier construction project - 'China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) Medium and Long-term FOB Resource Supporting LNG Carrier Project', which is of great significance in guaranteeing the safety of China's energy transportation, and effectively enhancing the independent controllable capability of China's LNG transportation industry chain.


  The ship type of 'Changheng Series' has four significant highlights. Good fast performance, low comprehensive energy consumption, compared with the previous generation of ships, single-day voyage carbon emissions reduced by more than 10 tons; good low-temperature performance, wide compatibility of cabin type, access to the world's 120 LNG shore stations on all continents; light weight of the empty ship, cargo carrying capacity, compared with the previous generation of ships, the weight of the whole ship is reduced by more than 1,500 tons, and more than 800 cubic meters of LNG is loaded on each voyage; manipulation and operation and maintenance of the ship is smart, and the routes are matched with a good match, which can be efficiently matched with a variety of operational requirements of diversified routes. It can efficiently meet the various operational requirements of diversified routes.


  It is understood that 'CNOOC medium and long-term FOB resources supporting LNG carrier project' is divided into one and two phases, with a total of 12 174,000 cubic meters LNG vessels. If all of them are put into operation, about 7 million tons of LNG will be transported back from all over the world every year, which can meet the use of 54 million families for nearly one year.


  For a long time, China's LNG imports are mainly delivered onshore by the seller, and the transportation right is mastered by the international large-scale resource merchants. Compared with Europe, Japan, South Korea and other big importing countries, China's LNG transportation autonomy is relatively weak. The innovative trade form of medium and long-term FOB (Free On Board) of CNOOC will provide more operational convenience for ocean transportation and international trade, and greatly enhance the trade flexibility of resource importers. CNOOC is accelerating the development of the whole LNG industry chain, enhancing the capacity of natural gas production, supply, storage and marketing, and building a diversified low-carbon energy supply system. Through the FOB I and II projects, it is focusing on building a high-quality LNG transportation fleet with Chinese characteristics that is safe, flexible, green and low-cost, to further enhance China's ability to independently control the whole chain and cycle of LNG transportation, and to contribute more to the protection of national energy security.


  In December 2021, 'Changheng Series' was awarded General Design Approval (GDA) and Pre-Class Approval (PCA) certificates issued by four international famous classification societies, including American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Bureau Veritas (BV), Lloyd's Register (LR) and Det Norske Veritas (DNV). Hudong-Zhonghua has successfully obtained the passport for ship construction, which has attracted global attention and orders have been pouring in. Up to now, Hudong-Zhonghua has undertaken a total of 34 vessels, which has become a hot 'meat and potatoes' in the market.


  Hudong-Zhonghua has been deeply engaged in the LNG field for 27 years, and has continued to break through the key technological barriers and bottlenecks in core competence, realizing the full coverage of products from offshore to offshore, from inland to inland waterways, and from small, large to super-large, and delivering more than 40 LNG storage and transportation equipments in total. At the end of April this year, the company and Qatar Energy Group signed a contract in Beijing for the construction of 18 of the world's largest 271,000 cubic meters of ultra-large LNG carriers, setting a record for the world's largest single shipbuilding order.
