Delivery of 'Polar' Icebreaking Survey Vessel in Guangzhou

  On June 24, the ice-breaking research vessel Polar, built by China Shipbuilding Group (CSG) Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI) for the North Sea Bureau of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), was delivered in Guangzhou. The ship, which started construction in November 2022, is a new-generation polar scientific research vessel designed and built independently by China, meeting the requirements of unlimited navigation area, obtaining the PC6 Polar Ice Class additional mark, and is also the first ship issued by China Classification Society (CCS) with 'ACC-POLAR' low-temperature and cold-protection symbol, with a bow that can break 0.8-1.0 meters. With a bow that can break 0.8-1.0 meters of current year ice, the ship can navigate in China's Yellow and Bohai Seas in winter to carry out monitoring and investigation of the marine environment in the ice area and take care of the rescue in the ice area, and at the same time, it has the ability to conduct scientific surveys in the polar sea area in summer.


  'Polar' icebreaking survey ship length 89.95 meters, width 17.8 meters, depth 8.2 meters, design speed 15 knots, in the 1-meter-thick current year ice in the icebreaking speed of up to 2 knots. The ship has a gross tonnage of 4,600 tons, a range of 14,000 nautical miles, and a replenishment can protect the ship's 60 people living at sea for 80 days. The ship is equipped with a variety of marine survey equipment, capable of undertaking comprehensive observation and survey tasks of sea ice, three-dimensional water, geophysics, atmosphere and other marine environment. The ship adopts full rotary electric propulsion system, and is equipped with channel side thrust, power positioning system and rocking reduction system, and can realize stepless speed change within the range of 0 to maximum speed, which makes the ship more flexible when sailing, berthing and carrying out scientific investigation.


  At the same time, the survey ship is also a marine acoustic environment-friendly survey ship, cabin noise and vibration control indexes to meet the China Classification Society's 'Steel Sea-going Ship Classification Specification' and 'Shipboard Noise Level Rules' related requirements. The indoor noise control of the vessel meets the requirements of Class 1 standard of Shipboard Noise Level Rules, and the underwater noise control meets the requirements of Class 2 standard of the Rules, with the maximum noise not higher than 55dB.


  After the delivery of the ship will mainly serve in China's sea ice and other marine disasters, disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities to enhance, but also further enrich China's ice area scientific research system, help the polar ocean, sea ice, the atmosphere and other environments of the integrated observation and investigation tasks, will be China's ice area scientific research to the direction of serialization and diversification of a major step forward.
