Top 10 Container Ports in the World in 2024
Ranked by container throughput, the world's top 10 container ports in 2024 are: Shanghai Port (1), Port of Singapore (2), Ningbo Zhoushan Port (3), Shenzhen Port (4), Port of Qingdao (5), Port of Guangzhou (6), Port of Busan (7), Port of Tianjin (8), Port of Jebel Ali (9), Port of Klang (10). The top 10 ranking remains basically unchanged, with Chinese ports occupying 6 seats (and Hong Kong ports in 2023 and before, for a total of 7 seats), Hong Kong ports officially dropping out of the global top 10, and Port Klang becoming a newcomer to the top 10.
The top 10 ports are all located in Asia. According to CTS data, global container traffic reached 183.2 million TEUs in 2024, up 6% year-on-year, so all major container ports did well last year. In each region, the fastest growing is the North American import container volume, an increase of 12% year-on-year; East Asia's export container volume accounted for the largest share, accounting for 61% of the global export container volume, the main export direction is North America and Europe, the trans-Pacific route and the Asia-Europe route is active in Asian ports to help high-speed growth.
Container trade within Asia is also an important reason for the high growth rate of Asian ports. According to Deloitte, in January-October 2024, the largest intra-Asian trade routes (Greater China to Southeast Asia routes) trade volume increased by 14.2% year-on-year. In the future, East Asian ports will continue to occupy the position of global head ports.
The throughput of the top five ports are more than 30 million TEU, the top ten ports all positive growth last year, including Ningbo Zhoushan Port and Shenzhen Port growth rate of double-digit, Shenzhen Port growth rate is the highest, 11.78%, one of the reasons for the decline in throughput in 2023; from the point of view of incremental, the top five ports last year, the throughput of all growth of more than 2 million TEU, of which the largest incremental increase in Ningbo Zhoushan Port, as high as 400 million TEUs.
