51 ships! Chinese shipyards back to No.1

  Chinese shipyards overtook South Korea last month (April) to return to the top spot amid a global order slowdown.


  According to the data released by Clarkson on May 9, the global new ship order book in April this year was 3.64 million revised gross tonnes (75 ships), based on revised gross tonnes, down 56% compared with the same period last year (8.36 million dwt), and an increase of 82% compared with the same period last year (2 million dwt).


  Among them, China's shipbuilding enterprises new orders for 2.51 million revised gross tonnage (51 ships), compared with the same period last year (6.15 million revised gross tonnage, 218 ships) decreased by 59%, market share of 69%, ranked first in the world, market share decreased by 5% year-on-year; South Korea's shipbuilding enterprises new orders for 0.62 million revised gross tonnage (15 ships), compared with the same period last year (0.9 million revised gross tonnage, 24 ships) decreased by 31%, market share of 17%, market share increased by 6% year-on-year.


  Data show that the total global new ship orders from January to April this year was 12.59 million gross revised tonnes (372 ships), down 50% compared with the same period last year (1,056 ships, 25.04 million gross revised tonnes). During this period, China's shipbuilding enterprises order volume of 6.82 million gross revised tonnage (215 ships), market share of 54%, a decline of 56% over the same period last year, ranked first; South Korea's shipbuilding enterprises order volume of 2.8 million gross revised tonnage (57 ships), market share rate of 22%, a decline of 50% over the same period last year, ranked second.


  Market share rate as a benchmark, in April, China's shipbuilding enterprises is about four times as much as South Korea's; 1April, China's shipbuilding enterprises declined even more.


  To the end of April as a benchmark, the global hand-held new ship orders for 160.46 million revised gross tonnes, down 1.93 million revised gross tonnes. Among them, China's shipbuilding enterprises hand-held orders for 94.67 million gross tonnes, market share of 59%, ranking first in the market; South Korean shipbuilding enterprises hand-held orders for 35.57 million gross tonnes, market share of 22%, ranking second.


  As of the end of April, the Clarkson Newbuilding Price Index was 187.11 points, up 1.7 per cent compared with the same period last year (183.92), down 0.32 per cent year-on-year, and compared with April 2020 (128.42), an increase of 46 per cent. Ship prices remained stable.


  By ship type, the newbuilding price of 174,000 cubic metre class large liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers was US$255 million; the newbuilding price of very large crude carriers (VLCC) was US$125 million; and the newbuilding price of ultra-large container ships (22,000TEU-24,000TEU) was US$273.5 million.
