China's First 16,000 TEU Methane-Fueled Dual-Fuel Container Ship Delivered in Shanghai
On 20 June, the ‘COSCO Shipping Yangpu,’ China's first 16,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) methane-fueled dual-fuel container ship built by Yangzhou COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry, was delivered at Changxing Island in Shanghai. The delivery of this vessel marks three historic breakthroughs in the field of large methanol dual-fuel container ship construction: the first order from a domestic shipowner, the first delivery by a domestic shipyard, and the first practical application of domestically produced methanol main engines.
The vessel has a total length of 366 metres, a beam of 51 metres, and a maximum container capacity of 16,136 TEUs. Its core technological innovations span the entire industrial chain. For example, it is equipped with an ultra-large methanol storage tank of 11,000 cubic metres, enabling the vessel to complete a single voyage from the Far East to the U.S. East Coast without mid-voyage refuelling; it features the first domestically produced methanol dual-fuel main engine, marking the first application of methanol generator sets and methanol dual-fuel ship boilers on a domestic container ship. The dual-fuel system can freely switch between fuel modes according to route requirements, achieving operational flexibility and stability at the world's leading level.
In terms of green and low-carbon indicators, the vessel has set multiple industry records: fuel consumption metrics in both fuel and methanol modes are globally leading; the vessel's Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) meets Phase III standards, enabling it to reduce approximately 120,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, equivalent to the carbon sequestration effect of planting 6.7 million trees.
Captain Hua Meiyuan of the vessel told reporters that carbon dioxide is the primary raw material for producing green methanol, so the process of manufacturing green methanol can achieve negative carbon emissions. The delivery of this container ship represents an important practical step in advancing green shipping development.
It is reported that Yangzhou COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry will build three more 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships this year and twelve 14,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships next year.
